Waltz with Bashir
Director Ari Folman, Bridgit Folman Film Gang, Les films d’ici, Razor Film/ Israel, France, Germany, 2008, 90’
One night in a bar, director Ari Folman’s friend admits he has a reoccurring nightmare where he’s being chased by 26 ferocious dogs. They conclude that the dream somehow relates to the Israeli army’s mission in the first Lebanon War in the early 1980s, when they were both still young soldiers. Folman is surprised that those terrible events have faded from his own memory. To solve the mystery, he visits his old friends and comrades. Delving deeper and deeper into the decades-long past, his memories, like surreal images, float up from his subconscious, revealing the horrors of that time.
As one of the most innovative films in world cinema in the last years, it utilizes animation techniques in a documentary film structure, achieving a precise narrative and blending of formal elements. The film received the Golden Globe award in 2009 for best foreign film.
